The CFL celebrates it's 25th Anniversary in 2025.
The Centre for Family Literacy envisions a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Our mission,
to empower people, strengthen communities and transform lives through literacy, moves us toward this vision.

Starting as Prospects Literacy in 1980 and transitioning to the Centre for Family Literacy (CFL) in 2000, CFL was the first centre in Canada to focus on the development of literacy within the family context. As well as offering free programs to individuals and families in the Edmonton area for the past 25 years, CFL also has a mandate to build capacity in others to support literacy and lifelong learning in their own communities.

To achieve this capacity building mandate, CFL provides training and professional development opportunities across Canada. For over 15 years, the Centre hosted larger events like the Food For Thought Symposium and Family Literacy Training Institute, bringing the literacy community and other sectors together to share ideas and strategies. in 2016 a shift in government funding made it difficult to continue these conferences. Since then, no event in Canada has focused specifically on family literacy, leaving a gap in professional development..

The Centre for Family Literacy is excited to bring back an opportunity for this kind of learning: The Family Literacy Conference! Taking place on October 7-9, 2025, this conference will provide a much-needed space for the literacy field and those from other sectors to connect, learn, and collaborate.

Attendees can expect engaging workshops, inspiring keynote speakers, and valuable networking opportunities. This event isn’t just about professional development—it’s about strengthening the literacy community. If you are passionate about literacy, this conference is for you.

Register today for our Pre-Conference Training Institute, 2-Day Family Literacy Conference, or both. We can’t wait to see you there!
